Apply for a building permit before you start your next project in the Municipality of Trent Hills. Building permits allow you to build, add to or renovate a building. They ensure everyone's safety and that your project follows our by-laws and the Ontario Building Code.

Complete a Permit to Construct or Demolish Application to apply. A Septic Permit Application might also be required if you're installing, replacing or repairing a septic system.
When do I need a building permit?
Contact us or see our Homeowners Guide to Building Permits if you're not sure if you need a permit. It is a violation under the Building Code Act to build without a permit.
You must get a permit if you are:
- Making material alterations
- Adding or repairing a building
- Constructing any new building or structure
- Installing new plumbing
- Installing a fireplace or woodstove
- Demolishing part or all of a building
- Renovating or converting an existing building
- Installing any type of swimming pool
Building permit exceptions
You don't need a building permit for the following:
- Replacing an existing door or window
- Installing siding on small residential buildings
- Building a building under 108 square feet (must conform to the zoning setbacks)
- Fixing a roof without any structural work
- Installing eaves troughs, if drainage is contained on your property
- Making your basement damp proof
- Painting or decorating, including interior finishes, but excluding insulation
- Reinstalling kitchen or bathroom cupboards without plumbing
- Erecting a fence
