May 4, 2025 - International Firefighters' Day
The Municipality of Trent Hills proclaims May 4, 2025 as International Firefighters' Day.
International Firefighters' Day is observed every year on May 4th. It’s a day to honor and recognize the sacrifices, dedication, and bravery of firefighters around the world who risk their lives to protect people and property.
Why May 4th?
May 4th is also known as St. Florian’s Day. St. Florian is the patron saint of firefighters. He was a Roman officer known for organizing firefighting brigades in ancient Rome and is remembered for saving many lives during fires.
The Origin of International Firefighters’ Day
It was established in 1999 after a tragic incident in Linton, Australia, where five firefighters lost their lives while battling a bushfire. This event sparked global recognition of the dangers firefighters face and the need to support and honour them.
How People Observe the Day
- Wearing a red and blue ribbon – representing fire and water, the elements firefighters face every day.
- Participating in memorials or moments of silence.
- Thanking local firefighters with cards, social media shout-outs, or community events.
