Municipality of Trent Hills Reaffirms Commitment to Respectful and Inclusive Public Engagement

Trent Hills, ON —  The Municipality of Trent Hills is committed to fostering civic engagement in a manner that is respectful, constructive, and welcoming to all.

The public comment period is a new opportunity intended to increase public participation in local government. It was introduced through a recent update to the Municipality’s Procedural By-law and is designed to provide Council with additional information as it considers matters before it.

Public comments are limited to items listed on the published Council agenda. Individuals wishing to speak must notify the Clerk’s Office by noon on the day before the meeting and identify the agenda item they wish to address. Each speaker is provided up to three minutes, may not use presentation materials, and may speak only during the public comment section of the agenda.

The Municipality values open dialogue and recognizes that public participation is an important part of local decision-making. However, participation must remain respectful and consistent with the Municipality’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming community.

During the July 28, 2026 meeting of Council, two members of the public spoke during the public comment period. Remarks made by one speaker were inconsistent with the standards of respectful public engagement expected by the Municipality and do not reflect the values of the Municipality of Trent Hills.

The Municipality reaffirms its commitment to respectful public participation, inclusivity, and building a community where all residents, visitors, businesses, and community organizations feel welcome.

Moving forward, speakers who do not comply with the Municipality’s standards for respectful participation will be directed to conclude their comments. Where necessary, the Chair may take further steps in accordance with the Procedural By-law to maintain order and decorum during the meeting.
