Trent Hills and Northumberland County Expand Community Safety Zones Ahead of New School Year

Trent Hills, ON – The Municipality of Trent Hills has expanded Community Safety Zones in Campbellford and Hastings following a review undertaken in consultation with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Council approved the changes through By-law No. 2026-057 at its meeting of July 28, 2026.

The review focused on areas with high pedestrian activity, school-related traffic and crossing-guard locations. The updated Community Safety Zones reflect areas frequently used by students, families and other vulnerable road users. The existing Community Safety Zone in Warkworth remains unchanged.

To support a coordinated approach to road safety, Northumberland County has also approved corresponding amendments to Community Safety Zones on County roads within Trent Hills. The Community Safety Zone on County Road 8 (Centre Street and Bridge Street East) has been extended to include pedestrian crossings at Cockburn Street and Ranney Street, providing more consistent Community Safety Zone coverage in the area serving St. Mary Catholic Elementary School and Hillcrest Public School.

“Community Safety Zones are an important tool for increasing driver awareness and enhancing safety in areas where pedestrians and students are regularly present,” said Mayor Bob Crate. “With students returning to school, these changes will help reinforce the importance of slowing down, remaining alert and taking extra care in areas where children and other pedestrians are travelling.”

Community Safety Zones are designated under the Highway Traffic Act in areas where public safety is of special concern. Certain traffic offences committed within a Community Safety Zone are subject to increased penalties.

The Municipality and Northumberland County will update signage where required to reflect the revised Community Safety Zone limits. Residents are encouraged to observe posted speed limits, remain alert and use extra caution when travelling through these areas, particularly as students return to school.
