Winter control quality standards

The Municipal Winter Control Quality Standards Policy includes standards for plowing/sand/salt operations for roads, streets, sidewalks, and parking lots, as well as snow removal in urban centres.

Don't put snow or ice on a roadway without written permission from the Municipality or the Ministry that’s responsible for the road. See the Highway Traffic Act for more information.

How you can help

You can help by:

  • Parking your vehicle off the street between November 15 and April 15 of each year
  • Not parking any vehicles over sidewalks
  • Placing garbage containers and blue boxes in driveways and not on snow banks
  • Keeping the boulevard clear of any obstructions such as fences, hedges and shrubs
  • Keep the area of any hydrants free of snow and ice for everyone’s safety
  • Help neighbours who are not physically able to shovel or have difficulty driving in the snow

Winter safety tips

Make sure that children do not play in snow piles at the side of the street or in cul-de-sacs. Make sure children do not pay near to snowplows, sanders, loaders and tractors as operators may not see them.

Drive according to the road’s conditions and give yourself a lot of time and stopping distance as weather conditions get worse.
